Text: Liturgy – Birkat Shalom

[Julie Silver writes:] I was studying the liturgy, Sim Shalom, but was terribly blocked in finding an appropriate melody, so after a while I just left it alone. Months later, when we were recording From Strength to Strength, my producer Troy Dexter was late arriving to the studio one morning. I started swimming laps in a nearby pool to pass the time. That was when the melody came to me. Originally, I had wanted the melody to pull the Hebrew along, as I always understood the liturgy as plaintive. Of all places, I found the melody while crawling slowly through the water, waiting for Troy to show up for our session. After he arrived, we worked it out, found the chords, rehearsed it for an hour, and recorded the final version of Sim Shalom that afternoon.
