RUACH - new Jewish tunes -

LEV B'LEV
Beth Schafer
Ruach 5761

[Beth Schafer writes:] Lev b’Lev (Heart in Heart) was written in honor of the 50th anniversary of my congregation. One Shabbat, as I was gazing out the window in the sanctuary during services, I thought that I was looking for God. Then, a cue came up requiring me to sing. My thoughts came back to the congregation; and, as I heard all of us singing together, filling the room with true kavannah [spirit or focus], I had a revelation about the purpose of the window. The window was not there for us to look out to find God; rather, it was there for God to look in and find us. At that moment, I realized that looking in faraway places for God would always leave my search unsatisfied. Looking into the hearts and souls and eyes of those with whom I worship consistently makes the search fulfilling.

VERSE 1
When we look for God we very often look above,
But that seems to be so very far away.
And in spending time with you I realize God is in our love,
Fueling the fire of our lives from day to day.

CHORUS
Leiv b'leiv, heart in heart,
Where my hand stops, your hand starts
In a circle of love that has no end.
Leiv b'leiv, heart in heart,
God's been with us from the start.
In this complicated world you'll need a friend,
And so I'll keep you close to me, leiv b'leiv.

VERSE 2
When we listen for God's voice we think we'll hear it loud and clear,
Like a giant clap of thunder from the sky.
But in singing songs with you, it is the most attentive ear
That knows that God dwells 'tween the words for us to find.

CHORUS

VERRSE 3
When we yearn for God's touch, we hope that pain will go away,
In an instant, in a mo ment be renewed.
But as we work together, toward that sacred peaceful day,
We learn that God heals each of us through me and you.

CHORUS

ENDING
And God will be with us, as together we will stay, leiv b'leiv.
